Attendance

Reporting an absence through ParentVUE or by telephone notifies the school that your child will be absent. Notification alone does not make an absence excused.

To receive an excused absence, appropriate documentation must be submitted to the Attendance Office within 72 hours of the student's return to school.

Examples of acceptable documentation include:

• A doctor's note
• Court documentation
• College visitation documentation
• Other documentation approved by the school that verifies the reason for the absence

Parent or student notes submitted after an absence will not be accepted as verification for an excused absence.

If appropriate documentation is not received within 72 hours, the absence will be recorded as unexcused in accordance with District attendance procedures.

Suffern High School uses ParentSquare to communicate attendance information with families.

Parents/guardians may receive an automated attendance notification when a student's absence has not yet been verified.

Absences submitted through ParentVUE generate a confirmation message indicating that the school has received the report and is processing the attendance record.

If you receive an attendance notification in error, please contact the Attendance Office as soon as possible.

The instructional day begins promptly at 7:30 a.m.

Students arriving after 7:30 a.m. must:

• Enter through the designated entrance.
• Report directly to the Attendance Office.
• Sign in with StudentVue.
• Obtain a late pass before reporting to class.

Students are encouraged to arrive before 7:30 a.m. to maximize instructional time.

Whenever possible, appointments should be scheduled outside the instructional day to minimize disruptions to learning.

Grades 9–11

• Parents/guardians should notify the Attendance Office in advance whenever possible.
• Parents/guardians must report to the Security Booth and present a valid photo ID.
• If someone other than the parent/guardian will pick up the student, the Attendance Office must be notified in advance.
• Students will be called from class after the parent/guardian arrives.
• Whenever possible, students will remain in class until the passing bell before being released.

Grade 12

Parents/guardians must notify the Attendance Office before the requested dismissal time.

Students must report to the Attendance Office to receive an approved Early Dismissal Pass before leaving the building. Students may not leave campus without authorization from the Attendance Office.

Attendance is directly connected to participation in athletics and extracurricular activities.

Students participating in practices, competitions, performances, or other school-sponsored activities must:

• Arrive at school by 11:05 a.m.
• Attend all scheduled classes, including Physical Education, unless excused by the school nurse or administration.
• Remain in school for the full instructional day unless an approved early dismissal has been authorized.

Parking on campus is a privilege for eligible seniors.

Students issued parking permits are expected to maintain satisfactory attendance and punctuality. Excessive unexcused absences or tardiness may result in the suspension or revocation of parking privileges.
