Cell Phone Policy

Suffern High School
Cell Phone Policy
2025-26 School Year

Dear SHS Families and Students,

Last year, we implemented a new approach to cell phones where students checked their devices into pouches at the start of each class. We noticed significant benefits from this approach, including greater social connection, increased focus on learning, and improved mental health. It also helped us prepare for the new state policy, NYS Education Law 2803(c), which creates a cell phone free environment for the entire school day.

To create a cell phone free environment in accordance with state law, we will ensure all students use assigned lockers to store their phones and internet-enabled devices during the school day. Students will store their devices in their lockers prior to 7:30 a.m. and retrieve them at 2:05 p.m. We recognize that this represents a significant adjustment for some students, and we are here to guide them through the transition thoughtfully and with care.

Below are some commonly asked questions about this policy:

What is changing for students starting in September?

  • We are becoming a cell phone–free school from 7:30 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. This means students will keep their phones away for the entire school day, including lunch and passing periods, so they can fully focus on learning, building relationships, and engaging with our school community.
  • All staff will work together to support a phone-free environment throughout the day. This means we will consistently encourage and remind students to follow the policy in all areas of the school, not just during class, so everyone has the same expectations and a distraction-free space to learn and connect.

What if I need to contact my child during the school day?

  • In the event you need to reach your child during an emergency or time-sensitive situation, call the main office (845-357-3800) for assistance. A secretary can arrange for a message to be delivered to your child, or ask the student to come to the Main Office to contact you by phone. Students will also have access to school phones in the main office and the nurse's office, should they be ill.

What devices are restricted under this new policy?

  • Internet-enabled devices include any smartphone, tablet, smartwatch, or other device capable of connecting to the internet and enabling the user to access content on the internet, including social media applications.

What are the consequences for students if they are found on their phone?

  • If a student is found on their phone, their device will be confiscated and brought to the main office. The student will need to meet with an administrator at the end of the day to retrieve their device. If the student continues to be referred for cell phone use, consequences can range from a lunch detention to a prescribed check-in/check-out system with the main office.

Accommodations will be made for students who require a personal electronic device for medical assistance.
